Nerd Wedding

Back before I left NJ, I went with my seester to the wedding of one of her high school friends. Now, it has been YEARS since I last went to a wedding, and next May I will be in the wedding party for one of my friends from high school, so I saw this as an excellent opportunity to be reminded of what exactly goes on in weddings/receptions. I was really just expecting the basics - your white dress, exchanging of vows etc, and then a reception with food and cheesy music. Boy was I in for a surprise. First let me just say, my sister has awesome friends. Which I already knew, but this wedding was an excellent reminder. The best way to describe the wedding, and more importantly the reception, would be beautiful, simply, and best of all nerdy! That’s right folks, there were little aspects of nerdiness sprinkled throughout the day. And it was marvelous beyond words. The wedding itself was mostly straight-forward, the typical Christian wedding you would expect. With one exception – instead of ring bearers, they had ‘Lords of the rings’. I squeeled a little bit inside when I read that in the program. Totally want to steal that if I ever get married. You’ll notice that theme a lot actually… me gathering ideas for myself down the line. :D

Then we had the reception. When we walked in, there was a table with a sorting hat on it. Yup, you heard correctly! A sorting hat, just like the one from Harry Potter. It was fabulous. Then they had a sign saying that the sorting hat was asleep so we’d have to sort ourselves, and there were name tags on the table. Marvelously nerdy and fantastic. At the bar there was a sign with a PotC quote. Any wedding that can manage to incorporate Captain Jack Sparrow, I am a fan of. :D The bridal party entered the reception to the theme from Harry Potter, and the bride and groom entered to Star Wars. I simply could not stop grinning. SO FANTASTIC! We were seated at the Harry Potter table (how appropriate, eh?) with their other nerdy friends so much of the time was spent discussing nerdy things. Like how the one guys’ bow tie was cool, how the flower arrangements looked like something from old school Doctor Who, and how we should (and proceeded to) write down some of our favorite HP quotes on the sign on our table. Also, how about this? The one couple seated with us got married in a museum with a T-rex skull behind the ‘alter’ and they walked down the aisle to the Jurassic Park theme and her bouquette stem was a SONIC SCREWDRIVER and the ‘flowers’ were made of pages from Sherlock. Holy crap. SO MUCH AWESOME. So many possibilities for a wedding that I never even thought of. I don’t know why it never occurred to me that nerdiness could be involved in weddings. Silly Jackie. Now that it has been brought to my attention, I must admit, I am quite excited. :D

One final amazingly marvelous nerdy aspect of the reception? Instead of the place settings reading ‘bride’ and ‘groom’ or ‘mr’ and ‘mrs’, they read….. ‘The Doctor’ and ‘The TARDIS’. No joke, I think that was my favorite of the whole night. Before learning that, I hadn’t thought I could like this people any more, and then that happened and I realized they were even MORE awesome than I had thought. Love it. :)

Overall, an extremely enjoyable afternoon/evening, full of lovely people, a lovely celebration of love, and more nerdiness than I would have ever expected. Best.
